SUMMARY:Garden University: Native Bee Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Decorate a native bee house and start your own mason bee colony! \nJoin us for a fun-filled family friendly workshop Saturday March 1st from 11am-1pm at the Oregon Gardens where we’ll learn all about native bees. These insects play essential roles in maintaining a balanced ecosystem\, and are important for pollinating all kinds of plants. But did you know that we have over 4\,000 native bees right here in North America\, and that many species nest in the ground or plant stems? \nWe’ll start out the class with a lesson on the different types of native bees here in the Willamette Valley\, and the various kinds of habitat they need. Then we will decorate mason bee houses. Students will also receive several mason bee cocoons to start their own colony\, seed packets to plant native flowers in their yard\, plenty of information on native bees\, and a poster with the different native bees found right here in Oregon. \nLimited spaces available** \n__ \nAbout the instructor: Heather Andrews is a research entomologist at Oregon State University. She works at a university extension office in Aurora where she studies growing practices in orchard crops that minimize their negative impact on the environment while maximizing yield. In her free time she makes jewelry\, draws and also plays the harp. \n__ \nMembers: $25 | General: $35 \nClick HERE to Purchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Garden University: Haiku Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to write haikus with Oregon Master Naturalist Natalie DaSilva using the blooming spring garden as your inspiration! Haiku is a traditional\, short form of Japanese poetry\, through which the poet conveys their experience of nature via a simple written formula. Using this simple formula\, anyone can write haiku. This workshop introduces you to classical haiku poetry\, and guides you in writing your own haiku poems while spending time in nature. You will have the opportunity to share what you’ve written with the group. \n__ \nGeneral Admission: $20\nMembers: $10 \nClick here to purchase tickets. \nYour event ticket includes admission to The Oregon Garden. We encourage you to enjoy our grounds before or after attending the workshop! \n  \nNatalie DaSilva is an Oregon Master Naturalist who enjoys nothing more than sharing her love of nature and of the Pacific Northwest with others. As a Certified Interpretive Guide she leads hikes and other nature-related programs in various locations in the Portland Metro Area for others to experience the beauty of\, and deepen their connection with\, this place we call home. \n  \nThe Oregon Garden’s Garden University program offers ongoing education opportunities on topics in alignment with the Garden’s mission\, such as pruning\, beekeeping\, cooking\, floristry and more. Oregon Garden members receive free\, or discounted\, admission to Garden University. Visit www.oregongarden.org/garden-university for upcoming Garden University opportunities.
