SUMMARY:Professional Development Workshop: Pruning Trees for Arborists
DESCRIPTION:Masa Mizuno came to the United States from Osaka and was the landscape director of the Portland Japanese Garden. Masa has worked as a landscape contractor in the Portland area since 1982. His work focuses on designing and maintaining residential gardens that incorporate Japanese garden ideas into the naturalistic style typical of gardens in the Pacific Northwest. In his practice and teaching\, he focuses on aspects of gardening such as maintaining the proper ratio of open space to allow plants to assume balanced proportions in relation to the other landscaping elements of rocks\, hardscaping\, herbaceous plants\, and ground cover. Inspired by his knowledge of authentic gardens in Japan\, Mizuno believes that garden plants should be pruned in a way that enables each to live in a comfortable space and that the gardener should continually be paying attention to the need in the garden for removal or transplanting of plants that are no longer in the right place. He takes considerable pride in maintaining gardens that he has designed and built and in maintaining the design’s long-term integrity. \nThis workshop will be hosted at the Oregon Garden\, one of the premier botanical gardens in Oregon. The workshop will include handouts discussing some basic concepts in plant management and aesthetics with a focus on some larger trees. The target audience for this workshop is arborists and other related professions that manage larger trees in ornamental landscapes. \nThe majority of the workshop will include Masa leading collaborative pruning with class participants. Masa Mizuno will demonstrate his approach to maintaining landscape plants within their natural forms and within the scale and aesthetic goals of a garden. Concepts covered will include managing the natural progression of shrubs and trees\, maintaining plants in proportion to the garden\, use of locally native plants as well as Japanese trees and shrubs. \n__ \n  \nPlease bring your own lunch! There are snacks and refreshments available for purchase in the Visitor Center. \n__ \n  \nRick Till\, a BCMA with a focus on aesthetics and tree preservation\, will assist and provide cross references to ISA best management practices as needed. \n\nISA Board Certified Master Arborist\, PN-8358B \n\n\nISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified \n\n\nVALID Tree Risk-Benefit Validator (www.validtreerisk.com/) \n\n\nTCIA Certified Treecare Safety Professional\, No. 04200 \n\n\nOregon LCB 100857 \n\n__ \n  \nClick HERE to Purchase Tickets \nLimited spaces available**
